Arriving at the airport in a foreign country can be a disconcerting experience. However, not with Pacaya Lodge & Spa, as your driver will be waiting for you in uniform and with a personalized sign. We will gladly load your luggage into our spacious, air-conditioned van. Relax, enjoy the countryside and enjoy the 45 minute drive to our hotel in the Nicaraguan jungle.

Masaya Volcano: An intimate night with an active volcano
This fascinating night tour begins with a walk to the Masaya Volcano National Park. You will see the smoke from the volcano long before you arrive. Your guide will take you through the park’s museum and interpretive center, where you will learn about the history, mythology and wildlife of the volcano. Afterwards, you will observe the active volcano and even see the reflection of the lava flowing down. You will be surprised to see the chocoyos (parakeets) returning to their nests inside the crater and the bats coming out of their caves in search of food.
Recommended equipment: comfortable but resistant walking shoes, light clothing, water, camera.

Hiking and Paddleboarding in the Laguna de Apoyo
Today, our hotel in the Nicaraguan jungle will give you the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve through hiking and paddleboarding. The day begins with a guided hike to the lagoon. During the descent, you will learn about the plants and trees of the reserve and possibly spot howler monkeys and beautiful tropical birds such as the Guardabarranco, Nicaragua’s national bird. Your paddleboarding guides will be waiting for you in the lagoon. They have top quality equipment and can teach you the proper technique if you have never paddleboarded before. You can change into your bathing suit at the lakeside facilities. The Laguna de Apoyo offers a perfect environment for paddleboarding and has some of the cleanest waters in the country. After paddleboarding, we will take you back to the lodge to enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the pool. If you are in a little pain, you can always take a dip in the Jacuzzi.

The day starts early with a bird watching tour in the private Montibelli Reserve, where you can observe parrots, hummingbirds, and the Nicaraguan national bird, as well as howler monkeys, reptiles and other wildlife. You will enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the reserve’s farms before heading to El Chocoyero.

This reserve is also famous for its bird life, especially the thousands of chocoyos (parakeets) that live on the surrounding mountain slopes. A comfortable walk through this lush forest will take you to two impressive waterfalls. You will feel like you are in the middle of the rainforest even though you are only a short distance from Managua.

Ometepe Island: A day on Nicaragua’s most famous island
The twin volcanic peaks of Ometepe have attracted travelers for years. It is necessary to get up early to enjoy all that the island has to offer. Your transportation will take you to the port town of San Jorge, where you will board a ferry for a one-hour cruise across Lake Nicaragua to the island.
You will appreciate the mix of rural and island life as we pass through several villages on our way to our first stop, the Ceibo Museum. Here, you will learn about the rich pre-Columbian indigenous tribes that inhabited the island for centuries. Next, we will visit the Charco Verde Reserve, known for its rich bird life, howler monkeys, butterflies and lush vegetation. After a lakeside lunch at Playa Santo Domingo, you will have the opportunity to take a dip in the “Ojo de Agua”, a natural spring with healing properties. We will then return to the ferry and start our way back to Pacaya Lodge & Spa.

Optional: If you prefer, you can opt for a horseback ride through a local farm instead of going to Ometepe.
Horseback Riding and Adventure in Rural Nicaragua
This unforgettable day in rural Nicaragua will take you to Hacienda Los Malacos, a colonial-style estate nestled in a lush tropical setting. Upon arrival at the farm, you will enjoy a horseback ride around the property and then take a paddle boat ride on a small river to observe the monkeys that live on the farm.
You will have the option to catch your own fish for lunch, which will be served along with fresh local produce from the farm. This relaxing day surrounded by beautiful scenery is the reason you come to Nicaragua.

Day off
You may be a little tired after a long day in Ometepe. You can use our free shuttle service to relax by the lake at the Laguna or explore Granada on your own. Suite with view
We also have a full-service spa if you would like a massage or any of the other therapies we offer. Additional day excursions are also available, such as hiking and canopy tours on the nearby Mombacho Volcano. You can postpone any of the hiking or paddleboarding excursions from day 6 to this day, which will give you two half days off instead of a full day.
